Underlord is a very decent offline hero for his tean fights presence as well as the fact that he almost needs no item to function. Therefore, underlord excels when his teammates can start the fight, and he will follow up with his aoe damage and aoe control. Although underlord provides most team fight value in almost all situation, his does not have the ability to start a fight. The second weakness is his zero-initiation. This may cause underlod to be completely shut down at the start of the game. The most deadly weakness is his slow movement and mediocre health points, which make him easily die to enemy burst damage. However, there are several weakness to underlord. Underlord can snowball and end the game early even before hard carries obtain their key items. All of his four skills are very valuable in team fights, providing outstanding damage, area of effect rooting, defensive aura, and an uninterruptable escape. Underlord is a very strong team fight contributor.

Effective against melee-centric lineups.However, Underlord is slow and lumbering, and often suffers from insufficient mana. With the health of a strength hero and the extra damage from Atrophy Aura, Underlord can stand his ground better than most supports. He excels at trapping enemies in a Pit of Malice, and mitigating incoming attacks with his Atrophy Aura. In general, attacks of the melee heroes who are entirely reliant on dealing physical damage and/or have very little to no area-of-effect abilities will make Underlord tickle and will have no effect against him, and will be unable to ambush Underlord and his team if Underlord chooses to use Dark Rift to get to a designated point of the map: Phantom Assassin, Terrorblade, Troll Warlord, Drow Ranger, Phantom Lancer, Chaos Knight, Sven, Wraith King, Bounty Hunter, Alchemist, Templar Assassin, Nyx Assassin, Bane.Underlord is a durable utility offlaner/support who takes charge on the battlefield, creating dangerous hazards over large areas, while teleporting his team across the map with Dark Rift.In general, heroes with long cooldowns on their abilities or ultimate will struggle against the relentless pressure provided by Dark Rift or Fiend's Gate (Requires Aghanim's Scepter): Terrorblade, Dragon Knight, Omniknight.In general, melee heroes without blink mechanisms or spell immunity will have a hard time positioning against Pit of Malice: Sven, Tiny, Wraith King, Dragon Knight, Meepo, Doom, Bounty Hunter, Dark Seer, Undying, Alchemist, Legion Commander.Templar Assassin has a hard time maneuvering around Pit of Malice.Firestorm will hit Templar Assassin while under the effects of Meld Meld.Firestorm will destroy Refraction charges very quickly.Boots of Travel 2 can be used to defend or counter push after Underlord uses Dark Rift.Pipe of Insight's barrier negates pretty much all of Underlord's magical damage.Shiva's Guard catches Underlord's team when they gather for Dark Rift, and can be used to deal damage if caught in his Pit of Malice.Diffusal Blade punishes Underlord for his low mana, and its active reduces his mobility further.

It can even push Underlord's teammates away from him before Dark Rift's teleport goes off.

Force Staff will push enemies out of Firestorm, Pit of Malice, and Atrophy Aura's effective range.

In general, heroes with spell immunity abilities won't be caught inside by Pit of Malice: Juggernaut, Lifestealer.

In general, heroes that provide vision will see Dark Rift coming: Techies, Templar Assassin, Treant Protector.

Enrage can quickly dispel the root of Pit of Malice.

Fury Swipes damage is not reduced by Atrophy Aura, essentially bypassing Underlord's only natural defense.
